چکیده

In conversation speakers design their utterances to be understood against the common ground they share with their addressees-their common experience, expertise, dialect, and culture. That ordinarily gives addressees an advantage over overhearers in understanding. Addressees have an additional advantage, we propose, because they can actively collaborate with speakers in reaching the mutual belief that they have understood what was said, whereas overhearers cannot. As evidence for the proposal, we looked at triples of people in which one person told another person in conversation how to arrange 12 complex figures while an overhearer tried to arrange them too. All three began as strangers with the same background information. As predicted, addressees were more accurate at arranging the figures than overhearers even when the overhearers heard every word. Other evidence suggests that the very process of understanding is different for addressees and overhearers. 8 1989 Acadermc Press, Inc.

A job interview in the MRI scanner: How does indirectness affect addressees and overhearers?

In using language, people not only exchange information, but also navigate their social world - for example, they can express themselves indirectly to avoid losing face. In this functional magnetic resonance imaging study, we investigated the neural correlates of interpreting face-saving indirect replies, in a situation where participants only overheard the replies as part of a conversation bet...

Who, Me? How Virtual Agents Can Shape Conversational Footing in Virtual Reality

The nonverbal behaviors of conversational partners reflect their conversational footing, signaling who in the group are the speakers, addressees, bystanders, and overhearers. Many applications of virtual reality (VR) will involve multiparty conversations with virtual agents and avatars of others where appropriate signaling of footing will be critical. In this paper, we introduce computational m...

Speakers' overestimation of their effectiveness.

Successful communication depends in part on an ability to anticipate miscommunication. We investigated speakers' ability to gauge their addressees' understanding. Participants in our experiments were asked to say ambiguous sentences while attempting to convey a specific intention to their addressee. When they estimated the addressee's understanding of the intended meaning, they showed a consist...

Mutual Beliefs of Multiple Conversants: A Computational Model of Collaboration in Air Traffic Control

This work develops a computational model for representing and reasoning about dia-logue in terms of the mutuality of belief of the conversants. We simulated cooperativedialogues at the speech act level and compared the simulations with actual dialoguesbetween pilots and air traffic controllers engaged in real tasks. In the simulations, addressees and overhearers formed belief...

Coordination of Understanding in Face-to-Face Narrative Dialogue

We report the results of a study investigating speakers' and addressees' coordination of understanding in face-to-face narrative dialogue. Analyses of the occurrence of addressees' acknowledgments and exemplifications of understanding showed that nonverbal forms consistently coincided with the speakers' gaze on their face. In contrast, there was less consistent correspondence between the addres...
